Exciting news for online businesses in Italy! Online sales are expected to reach a whopping 80.55 billion euros in 2023, marking a significant 27.14 percent increase from the previous year. Italian online stores saw an impressive growth of nearly 29 percent in turnover on average.
This data is sourced from the 18th edition of the Ecommerce Italia report published by Casaleggio Associati. In 2022, the ecommerce industry in Italy recorded a turnover of 75.9 billion euros, reflecting a 19 percent surge compared to 2021.
Inflation played a significant role in this growth, with a reported 6.16 percent increase in 2023. However, even after accounting for inflation, sales volumes showed an impressive growth of 20.98 percent.
Major Boost in Turnover for Online Stores
Initial expectations projected a growth of 17.26 percent for online store owners in 2023. Surprisingly, the data reveals a remarkable average turnover increase of 28.56 percent. Marketplaces were the clear winners with a staggering 55 percent increase, raking in 14.5 billion euros in sales. The travel and tourism industry also saw substantial growth, reaching 21.8 billion euros, a 42 percent leap from 2022.
Despite selling fewer items, the jewelry and watches sector managed to increase their turnover by 2%.
Not all sectors experienced positive outcomes, with electronics witnessing a 3.5 percent decrease in sales to 3.5 billion euros. Similarly, the online jewelry and watches industry saw a 4 percent drop in sales volume. However, by adjusting pricing strategies, this sector still managed to uplift its turnover by 2 percent, totaling 406.7 million euros.
